Tips for Rocking Bohemian Style

Have you been feeling those sweet bohemian fashion vibes lately? Bohemian style is always a chic solution for hot summer months.  They are lightweight, loose, totally flowy and set an effortlessly chic mood.

The Bohemian fashion vibe is hotter than ever. All you have to do is glimpse at the website for just about any brand to see that they are serving up an ample selection of Bohemian style.

This may come as a shock to some of you but guess what- Bohemian Fashion wasn’t invented by Free People or Anthropologie.

As with most fashion trends it began with a revolution.  The Bohemian subculture started in France after the French Revolution. As the country plummeted into a recession, artists as a group were no longer being supported by the wealthy. This created a difficult lifestyle of poverty. They lived cheaply, wore worn-out clothes, and took up a nomadic lifestyle, traveling in search of work.

Now, Bohemian style in both fashion and home decor is based on the idea of fusion and travel. In homes, this means mixing decor from all over the world, layering rugs and fabrics, and having a comfortable setting where anyone would feel creative, inspired, and comfortable.

In fashion, Bohemian style is super easy to wear. Flowy, romantic pieces inspired by artists and cultures from around the world have an artistic and free-spirited vibe. Staples include prairie dresses, maxi skirts and dresses, off-the-shoulder tops, prairie blouses, western inspired booties and other earthy pieces.  They work for all ages and all body types, which is one of the reasons this style has stuck around for decades.

Have you been wanting to try the Bohemian trend but you’ve been unsure how to pull it off?  Let’s put on some Neil Young, light a sage stick and get to work.

Here are a few tips for Rocking Bohemian Style:

  • The Rule of FOUR.  Stylist’s have a secret formula to creating AMAZING looks, it’s called the Rule of FOUR. You want to have at least FOUR points of interest to any look. Add up the things you are wearing and make sure there are at least FOUR pieces.  This includes accessories.
  • Mix prints. Remember my rule- when you mix prints use ONE color as an anchor to unify the different prints.  If the is a bit of blue in your skirt make sure there is a suggestion of blue in your top.
  • Add boots to dresses and skirts.  Ditch the heels and add boots- this will instantly toughen up your look.
  • Look for interesting fabrics such as prairie florals, macrame, patchwork, paisley, and silk.
  • Fringe is always a good idea.  A fringe bag or jacket is a perfect partner for a boho look.
  • Add a belt.  A belt will help define your waist in the midst of all this flowiness.

Circle Your Wagons The Prairie Trend Continues

The Prairie Trend

In case you haven’t noticed, things have been going full Little House on the Prairie over here lately- the retro Western-meets-Victorian Prairie trend has swept me off me feet.

What was once the silhouette of choice for Flea Market aficionados now has gone full on mainstream with designers such as Coach, ERDEM and Gucci sending models down the SS19 Runways clad in all things Prairie.  Shrimps Spring 2019 Collection even features a beaded bag with a literal ode to Little House on the Prairie.

So, what’s special about this style, aside from the joy the ruffles, detailed sleeves and petite prairie floral prints will bring to your life? This agrarian influenced trend with roots in the seventies is form meets function at its very best. It’s so easy to wear, looks great on every body type, every age, is light and airy yet chic and retro and it has all year round wearability!

Edge it up by combining it with street-style elements or westernize it by adding cowboy boots. Layer it for fall and pair with sandals for summer.  Mixing Prairie prints is easier than mixing the Granimals you wore as a kid.  They pretty much all stay in a relatively similar color palette so when you combine them it creates a calico clad dream.

What’s REALLY fantastic about this trend is that you can seamlessly blend high with low, vintage with bespoke!  H&M’s current Conscious Collection is an on-a-budget prairie loving gals’ wonderland and this bespoke skirt I’m wearing was crafted by Etsy Shop Owner Urban Prairie Girl– she custom makes skirts to your measurements with textiles she has gathered in her world travels.

I’m so all-in on this trend that who knows, you may see me next week in my OOTD photos feeding farm animals or raising a barn.

Westworld Inspired Prairie Style

Westworld Inspired Prairie Style

Westworld is back, and my obsession with the series has reached peak levels.

I can’t get enough of it, the amazing characters, sets and of course the style.

The women of Westworld have a bit more of a prairie vibe than a wild wild west type of fashion sense, a trend that I am oh so happy to get on-board with and don’t mind snagging some inspiration from.  It’s the perfect fusion of Western and Boho and it’s oh so wearable.

Think light airy fabrics paired with layered cuts, frills, pioneer worthy lace trims, delicate floral prints, high necklines, pretty calico yoke blouses, long hemlines, gingham prints and Little House on the Prairie-esc patchwork patterns in sun-faded shades.

Prairie style is one part romantic and feminine and one part wild rugged free-spirit.  It’s boho meets pure hard working country.

The key to pulling off the Westworld inspired trend is all in the styling. Wear a yoke print blouse with a pair of boyfriend jeans or a pretty prairie dress with a pair of chunky boots or a long tiered prairie skirt with a ruffled top.  Denim is always a good choice to pair with this trend, make sure it has some good sun-faded texture, and you can never go wrong with a saddle bag by your side.   Experiment with mixing different sized prairie florals that are in the same color range to create prairie perfection.  Stay away from cowboy boots so that your look doesn’t become too western, instead opt for wood sandals, lace up boho boots, suede booties and please NO cowboy hats!

Kate Young x Tura

Fashion eyewear leader Tura has teamed up with celebrity stylist Kate Young to create a collection that exudes an effortlessly cool retro vibe.

While designing the collection Young focused on sunglasses and eyeglasses that she herself would want to wear while scouring vintage stores all over the world for inspiration. The resulting collection (Young’s third with Tura), includes cat-eye, round and square styles in both sunglasses and opticals plus a childrens collection of which a portion of proceeds go to the Child Mind Institute, a non-profit that works to improve children’s mental healthcare.

“This Collection continues to pair vintage references with updated silhouettes to create a unique, memorable look that will withstand the test of time”, states Young ” I want her to feel glamorous even on the most casual of days, and I think this Collection achieves just that”.

I’ve been writing about Fall Fashion trends for the past few months so you already know that 60s and 70s inspiration are HUGE for Fall 2017.  Every single style from this fantastic collaboration pairs perfectly with Fall’s fascination with all things retro.

I am super impressed with the smart thoughtful details throughout the collection such as metal tips on the frames and easy cat eye lift that gives the classic wayfarer-esc silhouette new life.

There are SO many must-haves in this collection, it’s going to be tough to narrow it down to just one, but then again who says you have to?
