Five Cocktail Glasses Everyone Should Have in their Home

Five Cocktail Glasses Everyone Should Have in their Home

In the world of cocktails, not all glasses are created equal.

Each glass has a unique purpose and is designed to make each drink experience better- to bring out the aroma, temperature, color and flavor of the spirits and to preserve the temperature of the drink.

The season of patio drinking is upon us.  You are no doubt feverishly stocking up your bar cart to prepare and may have noticed that there are a gazillion different cocktail glass options out there which can be really confusing.  Because you are a discerning and fashionable cocktail drinker that may have visited some captivating speakeasy’s and were charmed by their GORGEOUS drinks, you know that you can’t just toss a carefully crafted cocktail into any old glass. But which cocktail glasses do you REALLY need for your home? Certainly you don’t need them ALL!

To figure out where you should splurge, where you should save, and what types of cocktail glasses you really need at home, I spoke with the experts on all things “chill” at Tommy Bahama at Fashion Show and they spilled the tea on the FIVE types of cocktail glasses you need to create your own little speakeasy right at home.

Red Wine Glass

Wine is all about the aroma. If you can’t stick your nose in the glass, it’s probably not a good glass. A red wine glass should have a stem and have a large mouth to release the aroma.  Red wines require a large bowl for their flavors and aromas to be fully enjoyed. That long, delicate stem is there for temperature control, keeping your hand away from the wine and preventing you from heating it and changing the flavor with your body temperature.

Champagne Flute

A friend once told me you should always have a bottle of champagne in the fridge so that you are ready to celebrate.  The same is true with always having a champagne flute at the ready. Champagne flutes are designed for one thing and one thing alone: temperature control. The moment your drink gets warm, the bubbles go flat, and that’s no fun for anyone. Keep the bubbles bubbly!

Stemless Wine Glass

Since their arrival on the cocktail scene, stemless wine glasses have created quite the debate. People either love them or can’t understand them, and there are some compelling reasons for both. The stemless supporters find these glasses easier to handle. While red wine aficionados hate them because you have no temperature control.  The reason they are a home bar must have is that they serve infinite purposes. Not only can they be used for wine (I recommend them for rose and white wine), but also for fun cocktails like sangria and frose.

Double Old-Fashioned Glass

A double rocks glass, also called a double Old Fashioned is the go-to glass for tons of different cocktails including this yummy “Pain Killer” made famous by Tommy Bahama Restaurant & Bar  (recipe at end of post). Super versatile, this powerhouse of a glass is primarily used to serve spirits over ice, as well as distilled spirits and sweet drinks that are overwhelming in large quantities, oftentimes, the drinks served from rocks glasses are built directly inside so they need to have a good thick bottom to stand up to the muddling of fruit and spice that may precede the pour.

A Double Old Fashioned is larger (taller) than a single old fashioned which is historically used for serving drinks “neat” i.e. without ice but there really is no need to have a both, a Double Old Fashioned is far more versatile and can handle both types of pours. You could also serve margaritas in these glasses, instead of getting a dedicated margarita glass. That’s why, if you’re only going to get one type of Old-Fashioned glass, the Double Old Fashioned is generally more versatile — just remember when serving a drink neat don’t fill it to the very top- unless that’s how you roll, lol.

Coupe Glass

While it’s a popular rumor that the shape of the coupe was modeled after Marie Antoinette’s breasts, it’s totally false. The coupe was originally designed specifically to serve champagne in 17th century England, about a hundred years before Marie was born. However, champagne aficionados quickly learned that they make for a pretty awful way to drink anything bubbly.  Due to the large amount of surface area, champagne loses its chill and carbonation way too quickly.

In most modern cocktail bars, the coupe glass has dethroned the V-shaped Martini glass as the go-to cocktail glass, in part because Martini glasses are awful!  They are awkward and spill all over the place. The coupe glass is a bit more forgiving, generally smaller and easier to handle, coupes have one of the largest surface areas of any cocktail glass which makes them perfect for cocktails served “up,” meaning it’s been shaken or stirred with ice and then served chilled, without ice — like a Martini. The stem ensures you don’t heat up the cocktail with your hand as you sip it plus you look totally fancy when drinking from one. It’s definitely a glass that impresses.

The Unexpected Summer Trend Everyone is Talking About: The Hawaiian Shirt

Hawaiian Shirt Trend

We live in an era of dad (and mom) approved clothing trends. First it was the dad hat then the mom jeans, dad hat and now there’s a new item to add to the list and I have to admit, I’m not mad about it, the Hawaiian Shirt.

Think tacky tourist, but make it fashion. It’s about embracing that vintage feel but reworking it to feel fresh.

Hawaiian shirts have been spotted on celebs from Justin Beiber (who wear his in heavy rotation) to Miley Cyrus and Emma Roberts.

This chill, laid-back, classic boxy cut, dad-on-vacation staple is now a must-have for both guys AND gals this summer season. Designer Richard Quinn included a cool boxy Hawaiian-print satin shirt with beaded embroidered flowers in his Spring 2019 runway collection. There were classic Hawaiian vacay vibes at Balenciaga, quirky-cool Hawaiian shirt looks at Dries Van Noten and retro Hawaiian Shirt inspired pieces at Gucci.

Although the bold, flashy Fear and Loathing in Vegasesc prints may be intimating at first, the trick is to edge it up.

Hawaiian shirts are actually super versatile and can be worn a ton of different ways. Pair one with something slim like a pencil skirt for a polished take or tie a Hawaiian shirt in a knot in the front to give it a cropped beachy effect and pair with some distressed  jeans.  Give it a 1/2 tuck into some easy paper bag shorts to ooze that model-off-duty mood or go retro-chic and pair it with a effortless flowy  maxi skirt.

Whether new or vintage, designer or high street the key to rocking the Hawaiian Shirt Trend is to make sure your Hawaiian Shirt has that classic boxy cut.

Dad Style on Las Vegas Now

I don’t know if you guys know this or not but Dad’s are totally trending.

Dad hats are hotter than hot, millennials are OBSESSED with Dad Bod’s and Instagram has a gazillion accounts dedicated to HOT Dad’s (Hello @DILFS_of_Disneyland) .

With Father’s Day right around the corner now is the perfect time to up the style factor of the dad in your life with some Instagram worthy Dad trends from Tommy Bahama.

Last week I did a cute little segment on Las Vegas Now with my pal Lindsey Simon to show off some hot Dad style with the help of Tommy Bahama and some handsome gents from TNG Models.

Colorful tropical prints are everything this season (as I mentioned in my OOTD last week) and Tommy Bahama is the “Dad” of tropical prints. Cody is wearing a must-have for summer, Tommy Bahama’s Cotton Camp Shirt.

It’s feather light, airy and totally breathable.  Made of cotton with just a touch of spandex, it’s designed to move with your body.  I paired it with Tommy Bahama’s lightweight Portside 10.5 shorts which are ideal for the guy that doesn’t like to show too much leg.

Shyllon is wearing something new to the Tommy Bahama range of Camp Shirts, this AMAZING Puckered texture cotton Camp Shirt.  I AM OBSESSED with the texture and feel of this fabric!  It has a seersucker vibe and creates a put together look that is equally at home at the beach, brunch or a BBQ.  This super on-trend striped short also has the puckered texture and is so AMAZING my hubby went straight to Tommy Bahama and bought them.

I get asked by alot of readers what is the on-trend length of shorts for guys.  Too short and you look like a throwback to an early 80s Richard Simmons and too long you look frumpy and unkempt. The rule of thumb is that shorts should hit about two inches ABOVE the knee.

One of my favorite Father’s Day finds is this portable BBQ from Tommy Bahama.  I love the retro style artwork.  It folds out easily for a beach BBQ then secures with the straps and leather handle making it totally portable,

Jewaun is also wearing a Puckered Texture Cotton Camp Shirt.  I am so OBSESSED with these shirts I couldn’t stop touching them the whole segment LOL.

This print has a cool retro Hawaiian feel and I paired it with these easy, super comfy Island Chino pants then gave them a cuff at the bottom for a beachy resort look that is totally Hot Dad Worthy.

You can pick up these looks for the dad in your life at Tommy Bahama retail locations nataionwide.  In Las Vegas at Town Square, Fashion Show, Forum Shops and Miracle Mile Shops.

Burn Notice: Steal the Style

Sadly, my Summer Blog Posts will soon be at an end..it will shortly be time to move onto Fall/Winter topics but I cannot leave summer without a Post on Style inspired by one of my favorite television shows USA’s “Burn Notice”.

To me Burn Notice is Summer!  So grab a Mojito and lets get dressed!

For those of you not familiar with this sizzling hot Miami based series here is a short run-down: Jeffrey Donovan stars as agent Michael Westen a “burned” spy who returns to Miami where he uses his special ops training to help those in need, and track down the men who wrongly burned him with the help of his trigger happy ex-girlfriend Fiona (Gabrielle Anwar) and hilarious sidekick  Sam (Bruce Campbell).

With an affinity for yogurt, Michael Westen’s style is classic easy Miami sophistication.  Who wouldn’t want to dress like this guy! He’s as cool as it gets! Linen and light weight suits, great shades and crisp dress shirts.

Here’s what you need to Steal the Style:

Fiona “may look like she just stepped out of a fashion magazine but she’s a force to be reckoned with”. She is Michael’s on again, off again, and then on again girlfriend.  “Fiona is definitely a shoot first and asks questions later kind of gal. Her fearless nature is both enticing and dangerous, as she is capable of making things go “boom” very quickly.”

Her style includes  slinky one shoulder dresses, fitted jeans, easy tanks and of course the famous hip bag!

I have been searching for this bag FOREVER and finally found the PERFECT one at Happy Cow! Happy Cow’s line is  AMAZING!  “Completely Environment-Friendly: The entire range of bags & accessories are handcrafted from recycled leather. We purchase off-cuts of leather from high-end furniture manufacturers, anything that is too small to make furniture out of is sold to us. Effectively meaning we are using brand new, high-quality leather that would otherwise be thrown away. This means less pressure on the environment and no unnecessary suffering. ” Happy Cow is my new obsession!  The waist and hip bags look super-cool and are one of my favorite things to wear on set!  Hands free!  I LOVE HAPPY COW!  http://www.happycow.com.au/

Here’s what you need to Steal the Style:

Sam is Michael’s hilarious and dependable sidekick.  An ex Navy Seal who loves Mojitos and rich divorcees.  His style is Classic Tropical Resort.  One stop at Tommy Bahama and you’ve got it!
