So Thirsty: Aperol Spritz Inspired Outfit

Aperol Spritz Inspired Outfit

For some crazy reason I have been craving an Aperol Spritz in a bad way.  Like not just craving but obsessing about sipping one.

I wake up thinking about it, I spend the day fantasizing about it and at night my dreams are filled with Aperol Spritz fantasies. I have no idea where this sudden hankering came from- I’m usually more of a tequila based drink kind of gal- but it’s here and it won’t let up.

I’m so thirsty that my outfits are even starting to resemble and Aperol Spritz.

If you haven’t tried one before, I highly recommend you give it a sip.  The orange-red cocktail is reminiscent of an Italian soda and combines just three ingredients: Aperol, Prosecco and soda water.

As pretty to drink as it is to look at, an Aperol Spritz is pleasantly citrusy, perfectly bubbly, slightly bitter and the orangey hue is an instant mood booster. You need absolutely NO bar skills to make a spritz.  It’s so easy!

Aperol Spritz

  • 2 oz Prosecco – Can’t find any? Don’t like Prosecco? Use Champagne or Cremant de Loire instead for a dry taste, or Moscato d-Asti if you want a sweeter flavor.
  • 2 oz Aperol – The namesake of the recipe!
  • A Splash of Soda – Soda water or sparkling water. Feel free to use flavored sparkling water, ideally citrus, for some extra flavor.
  • Orange – Freshly sliced for garnish. I like blood oranges because of their deep rich beautiful color.

Fill a wine glass with ice. Add the Prosecco first, then Aperol, and finally soda. Stir gently and garnish with a fresh orange wheel.

We finally made our weekly grocery trip and I scored a bottle of Aperol!  Whoo Hoo!  I’ll be mixing these babies up on Easter morning for a two person boozy brunch with my hubby and I’ll be wearing this Aperol Spritz inspired outfit.

Cheers!

Why a Shirtdress is the Perfect Summer Silhouette

ShirtDress

It’s time to get started on curating a summer wardrobe- after all the unofficial start to summer, Memorial Day, is coming up next week and there is one piece that both designers and street-stylers agree should be in everyone’s wardrobe this season, a Shirtdress.

This wearable staple popped up on the runways in a medley of prints and colors, from Tory Burch’s striped collared dress to Tibi’s vibrant green ruffle hemmed look.

It’s nothing new, the style has been around for decades and soared to popularity in the 1950’s.

Inspired by the men’s wardrobe a Shirtdress borrows details from a men’s shirt such as a collar and button front. Constructed similarly to a men’s dress shirt it sport’s a super forgiving fit which makes it perfect for just about every body type.

They let you look very feminine, without taking too much effort or sacrificing your comfort.

The shirtdress really is the perfect summer silhouette and can take you seamlessly from work to a cocktail party!  Just switch up your shoes and accessories to become a wardrobe chameleon in a flash.

I predict Shirtdresses will totally be this season’s new throw-on-and-go outfit. Style with a pair of slide sandals for a casual weekend look, heels for an evening event or sleek sneakers for a day of brunching and shopping. Whether you like something clean and crisp, retro and ladylike or a look that’s more boho chic, this season has a shirtdress for every style, budget, and body type.

Trends Vs. Personal Style

Trends Vs. Personal Style

I’ve dropped tons of trend knowledge here for you, each season I break it down by silhouette, style and color but today I wanted to take a trend-break and discuss the importance of having your own UNIQUE personal style.

There are certain style fundamentals that always ring true no matter what your size, age or taste in clothing may be: Wear what looks good on you, what flatters your shape, and what reflects your personal style.

With that said, there is no escaping “trends”.  No matter what you say or think the simple fact is, if you buy clothing you are buying into a trend (whether you realize it or not) and with so many trends coming and going each season where do you draw the proverbial fashion line?

The question that poses itself is – how do you keep up with trends and still not lose your own unique style persona?

Trends vs. Personal Style- the battle of the ages.

The truth is Trends and Style work together.  They are like a great meal and a glass of wine.  One helps to compliment the other and they need to be combined in just the right way.

Trends are set by the fashion industry to tell us what to buy and how to wear it. It is often also a cycle, which is why every five years acid-washed jeans becomes the “thing” again, and why suddenly those stilettos are passe and chunky heels come back in style.

Style is something you have that is unique to you. It’s the reason why that Instagrammer you follow can wear biker shorts and a blazer, and rock it, and you can’t; because if it’s not your style, you will feel weird- like you are in a costume or wearing someone else’s clothing.

Do you ever see something and think “That’s so Christie“?  Why?  Why do you think of me when you look at that piece? Maybe it’s a mixed print or a great cowboy boot- those are both signatures of my unique personal style.

The key to not ‘loosing yourself’ in trends is to pick and choose what pieces you like and incorporate them into your own personal style.  Be selective and meticulous.

For example, I love vintage.  Like LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Vintage. But I also can’t get enough of the current edgy western and pastoral influences we are seeing this season.  So how do I choose?  I don’t!  I look for vintage or consignment pieces that have a western or pastoral vibe and pair them with current season pieces to create a totally unique look that is all my own.

Another trick is to always remain consistent when it comes to accessories. Accessories are the glue that holds the entire style together, so make sure you have a very curated selection that is conspicuously and unmistakably you. This way, whatever you wear, you will still remain you, because your shoes, bags, and distinct choice of jewelry will make sure you’re spotted and recognized from a mile away.

You shouldn’t change your personal style to adopt a trend- the trend should conform to your personal style.

The biggest advice I can give you is to BE YOURSELF.

If all your friends like something and you don’t, then don’t wear it. If no one else wears what you do, embrace it. If there is a certain pattern, color, type of clothing you love, then wear it.

There’s nothing wrong with being the women in the floral dresses all the time, or the woman who is always in a leather jacket. These things help make us unique and our styles help us represent ourselves in this huge world of ours. Your style will always be better than a trend, but that doesn’t mean a trend won’t become your style.

Like Emily Post said “The woman who is chic is always a little different, Not different in being behind fashion, but always slightly apart from it.”

Easy Summer Retro Vibes

Easy Summer Retro Vibes

This warm weather has me feeling all sorts of Retro Vibes.

There is something so perfectly summer about a vintage tee paired with a retro color palette.  It easy, chic, says vacation, begs for a road trip and encourages a little adventure.

Vintage looks are so totally on trend this season.  Fashion designers from A to Z have hit the archives this season to give designs from days gone by a comeback.  Gucci is gushing the retro aesthetic and Tory Burch based the whole season on interior decorator David Hicks designs from the 60s and 70s.

I personally am an avid vintage shopper but if you don’t have the patience to hit the thrift and vintage shops you can create the look with both designer and reproduced pieces as well.

The key to creating a fun retro vibe with color is zeroing in on the shades, patterns and prints of a particular era. I LOVE those mid-century modern greens, mustards, oranges and browns.

Let those colors flow through your look then incorporate more modern pieces to keep the look current and contemporary. Keep in mind it’s less about matching and more about complimenting.

Embrace the kitsch and cuddle up with the whimsy that’s what summer is all about! And always remember my #1 style tip:  Wear the wrong shoes. I know it sounds silly but that contrast can make a look.  Swap out your high heels for flat booties, your sneakers for high heels and your sandals for sneakers. The more wrong it feels, the more right it usually is.

How to give your look a cool retro vibe

NARS Spring Color Collection Launch

Last week I hosted an amazing Influencer event at NARS in the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace.

Myself and 40 of Las Vegas’ top Influencers were treated to some fabulous cocktails from Avion Tequila and Absolut Elyx (seriously they were so good and named after two of the new Lip Covers-Summer Fire Paloma and Hell Gate 45), fabulous hair styling from DryBar and of course a presentation of the NARS Spring Color Collection.

The NARS Spring It On Spring Color Collection includes new products for eyes, lips and cheeks with a ‘fresh spectrum of luminous neutrals and molten accents’. Sounds incredable, right?

NARS Spring Color Collection Spring It On

If you are looking for glowy cheeks and soft saturated lips this is the collection for you.

Celebrity makeup artist Saffire Cherry walked us through the “Spring It On” Limited Edition Color Collection which features Liquid Blush in Hot Tin Roof, a highlighting blush in Free Soul, Four Lip Covers (Under Arrest, Summer Fire, Hellgate and Embrase Moi) and two Velvet Shadow Sticks (Frioul and Galice). PLUS a full course on the totally amazing NARS Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation and Radiant Creamy Concealer.

She shared a great tip for applying the Liquid Blush, which is a product that may seem daunting to many.  Saffire says that when you apply pat it into the skin rather than rubbing.  Because it’s a liquid most people think they need to rub it in but you will get more precision by patting and a little goes a VERY long way because it’s super pigmented!

I am a huge fan of the Lip Covers.  They are the perfect liquid lipsticks. Providing full coverage, they have a smooth creamy feel and just the right amount of shine.

Embrasse Moi is a pale shimmering champagne that look great alone or layer with another shade. Under Arrest is a warm beigey tan. Summer Fire is a shimmering neutral-cool rose pink that isn’t too blue so its a great pink option for all skin tones and  Hell’s Gate (my favorite for the collection) is a gorgeous brick red. They don’t wear all day like the Powermatte Lip Pigment but they have pretty good lasting power.

NARS Spring Color Collection Spring It On

Meet my new OBSESSION… NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer. Although this product isn’t new to NARS they just launched six more shades so now it comes in 22 shades!  So matching your skin perfectly is even easier.

How had I never used this before!  It’s perfectly lightweight, smooth, and totally blendable.  I also learned a trick at the event.  Do you have a problem with your concealer wearing off or disappearing half way throught the day?  If you apply NARS Radiance Primer under your eyes like eye cream BEFORE you apply your concealer it will help it wear longer, go on smoother and not settle into fine lines!  PLUS it has SPF 35 which is always a good thing!

….and last but not least NARS  Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation.  Available in 33 shades (yes thirty three shades so you can get your best match EVER) this is NARS first specifically long-wearing foundation.  Its breathable, fade-resistant formula is infused with Raspberry, Apple, and Watermelon extracts to help smooth and improve the look of your skin instantly, and over time for full-powered radiance. The finish is a smooth satin and it looks incredibly dynamic.  It is a very high coverage foundation. If you’re just looking to even out your skintone a touch, but want freckles and natural dimension to come through, this isn’t for you. If you’re like me, and want an 100% even tone covering your entire face, then this product is a dream come true for you.
