Caring for Velvet

In case you missed it last Fall, velvet is back for a encore performance in Fall 2017.

Velvet was EVERYWHERE on the Fall 2017 runways from gorgeous lux stamped velvet at Erdem to shiney matchy matchy sets at Gucci and 70s retro velvet pant suits at Prada.

Each designer gave velvet their own unique twist making the possibilities for styling it endless!

One of my favorite things about the trend is that even cheaper fabrics can look chic when you’re wearing velvet so you don’t have to spend a ton!

Whether it’s an investment piece or some fast fashion, keeping your velvet looking plush, fluffy and lux takes a little know-how.  Proper care for and storing of your velvet pieces is the key to their longevity.

Caring for Velvet

NEVER EVER iron velvet, you’ll crush the nap.  Even an iron at a low temperature can cause damage to the soft texture. If your velvet garment gets wrinkly, use a steamer to relax the creases but only steam from the INSIDE of the fabric.

Invest in a clothing brush.  This old school method of clothing care will help to remove dirt and grit that accumulates on the surface plus it will keep the velvet from becoming crushed. Brushing your velvet after every wear will help to ensure that any creases or matted patches don’t become permanent.  If you leave these spots untreated they can eventually lead to bald patches,  ESPECIALLY on velvet shoes and handbags!

Do not fold velvet and NO WIRE HANGERS! Instead hang velvet on padded hangers.  Make sure to leave some space around the piece, don’t let it become crushed in your closet.

NEVER hang your velvet inside plastic clothing bags this will make them sweat and can cause damage the fabric.

Velvet gets flattened easily, so if you spill something, don’t press or blot. Shake off the moisture and, if it leaves a stain get it to the dry cleaner ASAP.

If velvet shoes are you OBSESSION make sure to check the weather report before wearing them (Rain + Velvet= DESTRUCTION) and avoid wearing them to a club or bar where a drink could easily be spilled on them.  I have my velvet bags and shoes treated with a protective coating from my shoe repair shop.  You can do this at home as well just make sure that you follow the directions and make sure the protective spray you are using is safe for velvet.

Corduroy The Comeback Kid

Corduroy Fall Fashion trend

One peek at just about anyone’s Fall/Winter 2017 Collection and it’s obvious Corduroy is Fall 2017’s comeback kid.

Yes, you heard correctly the fabric of your childhood play clothes, 1960’s mini skirts and your college professor’s blazer is a major player this season.

Corduroy was all over the Fall 2017 runways in a variety of shades from rich autumn burgundies, chestnut and moss to wintry icy blues and snowy creams. Marc Jacobs showed outerwear with shearling-trimmed cord jackets in taupes and maroons, Prada gave us the perfect two-piece, made of brown corduroy with mixed fabric pockets and Mulberry strutted down the runway with the ultimate flowy wide leg corduroy trousers while Isabel Marant presented sweet workwear jackets with puckered shoulders and balloon sleeves and Gucci delivered corduroy in a multitude of ways from floral printed jackets to groovy retro trousers.

This close cousin of velvet is a must-have in both mens and womens trends this season. (Corduroy is basically a ridged form of velvet. Both materials are derived from fustian fabric, a heavy cloth woven from cotton- in fact corduroy is also known as ribbed velvet).

With designers delivering so many ways to incorporate the fabric into your wardrobe, whether you rock it in the form of trousers, suiting, matching sets, skirts, outerwear paired with shearling or a dress, there is no excuse to skip this trend.

Stylist Tip: Because Corduroy is so rigid and heavy it works best when you soften it’s appearance by pairing with silky soft fabrics or uber fuzzy knits.

How to Add the Western Trend to Your Look

Western Fashion Trend

The Fashion world went bat S*&^ crazy when they saw the DIOR RESORT 2018 show “Dior in the Desert” back in May.

Donned in Western Inspired looks instead of on a runway, models walked back and forth on packed desert dirt in the middle of the Santa Monica Mountains in the Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve just after sunset as hot air balloons swayed in the background.  Seriously it was magical, and after the show hit the web not a single fashionista alive could wait even one more second to infuse that Wild Wild West vibe into their own closet.

Spanish Style Cowboys hat’s immediately sold out from coast to coast.

But before the DIOR show even happened designers were already tipping their hat’s to the Modern Cowgirl in the FW17 shows.  Western motifs were everywhere from DSQUARED2 to Cavalli and Chloe in the form of grommeted leather jackets, fringed shirts, leather pants and prairie dresses.

So what does that mean for you?  Well yes, the Western trend is HUGE this season but that doesn’t mean you have to ride into Fall guns a blazin’ looking like Annie Oakley.

You can give your Fall look a dash of Yee-haw by adding a few key elements of western and prairie style while still staying true to your own personal vibe.

Opposites attract, try pairing cowboy boots with a flirty dress, or add fringe elements such as a jacket or bag to your evening look.  Remember CONTRAST is a fashion girl’s best friend.

By choosing one or two western inspired statement pieces to do the talkin’  you stay on-trend without looking like you are wearing a costume.

3 Fall Trends You Should Know

Any moment now the big fat delicious September issues of your favorite fashion magazines will land in your mailbox packed full of Fall Fashion goodness.

Time to get those pens ready and take note of What’s in, What’s Out and What you need to get your hands on NOW!

As a Fashion stylist I am always working a season ahead (right now I’m looking at trends and planning shoots for Resort 2018) so its pretty fair to say that I know my way around Fall 2017’s must-haves  (I have been working with them since June).

To get you up to Fall Fashion speed and in the fashion-know I focused this weeks Outfit of the Day on three of my favorite Fall 2017 trends: moody florals, high necklines and boxy silhouettes.

Moody Florals are not only an absolute must-have for fall they are also the most seamless way to transition between seasons.   Your fresh, light springy floral prints turn darker and more opulent for fall.  Think bouquets of burnt orange, caramel, toffee, burgundy, oxblood, brown, deep blues and rich purples.

The perfectly moody fall floral I’m wearing was actually once a dress that I scored on the clearance rack at Neiman Marcus Last Call for $25.  I loved the top of the dress but not the bottom- it was way too short for me- so I had my tailor transform it into this oh-so-on-trend high neck blouse!

High Necklines.  For Fall 2017  The Victorian Era reigned the runways.  Loads of lace, ruffles, and high necklines cascaded down the catwalks of the most notable designers.  Expect to see regal high necklines all season long.  The good news about this trend is that its super chic, perfectly romantic and incredibly flattering.

Boxy Silhouettes are everything this season.   Designers got Utilitarian with workwear-inspired boxy shapes in everything from denim to boiler suits, suiting, layering pieces and topcoats.

This beautiful boxy Longchamp jacket was my score of the summer. I was combing through the depths of the Nordstrom Rack Clearance section and stumbled upon it for $100!

#Winning

But it gets even better.  It was a clear the rack day so I got another 25% off the $100!

Yaas oh yaas.

Stylist Tip: Remember that trends are meant to mix and match.  I used THREE trends to create this chic fall day look. You don’t have to go head to toe Victorian or over the top with boxy on top and bottom.  Let the trends be fluid, use them to inspire you to create something new.

What Fall Trends are on your Must-Have list this season?
