Why You Should Be Rockin’ A Denim Jacket

Denim jacket

If you ask me, denim jackets are the great wardrobe equalizer.  Classic and timeless they are one of those staple items that will NEVER go out of style, look great on EVERY body type and work for EVERY age.

The true beauty of a denim jacket is that it goes with literally EVERYTHING and works in EVERY SEASON! Seriously, no matter when you wear it or what you pair it with you really can’t go wrong.

It lends a casual easy vibe to an evening look, works as a lightweight layering piece without covering up the rest of your outfit and is the perfect go-to piece when a look feels a bit too stuffy and needs a little edge.

Sometimes we need that one piece to pull a look together, and a denim jacket does that. It gives a look interest, depth and a bit of swag.
It’s one of those classic pieces that you should have in your closet season after season.
But for a denim jacket to do it’s job it needs to be the RIGHT denim jacket.

When selecting a denim jacket there are a THREE major things you need to consider:

1. COLOR- Just like jeans, denim jackets come in all shades of blue (and beyond). Darker denim feels more versatile throughout the seasons so if you want something you can wear all year, go with a darker wash. I am a big fan of contrast so if you plan on rockin’ that denim jacket with an all black look maybe opt for a light/distressed wash to give the look some tension and interest.
2. FIT- Although the oversized trend comes and goes- denim jackets are best when they fit a bit snug, to create that lean, classic silhouette.
3. LENGTH- A classic denim jacket hits at hip length, which is perfect for pairing with jeans or pants since it won’t cut you off at the waist. A cropped denim jacket is a good choice when you want to wear it with skirts and dresses, as the shorter length visually raises your waist and elongates your legs.

Out of all the jackets I have in my closet (and there are ALOT), I find myself almost always reaching for my denim jackets to style my outfits with.

Seasonless, timeless, durable, longlasting and just plain cool they are a classic staple and you need one. Period. Whether its a dark wash, aged or embellished with patches, hardware or embroidery a denim jacket is a must for this season and the seasons ahead.

Seasonal Fashion Depression, Even Stylist’s Get the Blues

Seasonal Fashion Depression

After what seemed like the longest January in history, with the WORST cold season ever, we have now reached that weird time of year where one minute you need a coat and the next it feels like full-on Spring.  It’s enough to give you the Fashion Blues.

I call it that dreaded “in-between” fashion season which often brings with it Seasonal Fashion Depression creating anxiety filled “I have nothing to wear” moments.  You know what I’m talking about, we have all felt it and typically resort to a dark, comfy, lackluster, less-than-stylish, uninspired “uniform”consisting of an oversized sweater and leggings.

This is when I like to cozy up to some fashion comfort food and embrace my favorite feel-good pieces while waiting for Spring Fashion to land.  There are certain silhouettes and certain styles that go beyond the season, they exist in a timeless fashion bubble that remains chic year after year and are the perfect boost you need for fashion limbo season.

I have FIVE such go-to pieces that are sure to perk up your wardrobe and pull you out of that Seasonal Fashion Depression:

  1. Denim Jackets. Classic, timeless and totally seasonless they are one of those staple items that will NEVER go out of style. One of the reasons denim jackets are so awesome is because you can wear them with literally anything. They lend a casual easy vibe to a look, work like a boss as a lightweight layering piece without covering up the rest of your outfit and are my go-to when a look feels a bit too stuffy and needs a little edge. Sometimes we need just one piece to change up our look and pull together a whole new outfit from our tried and true pieces. A denim jacket is one of those classic pieces you may already own from previous seasons, or just the piece you need to add for fresh styling ideas.
  2. Midi Dresses- midi dresses always make me feel chic.  They are an effortless put-together all in one way to boost your style plus they hide any extra pounds you may have put on during the holiday months.
  3. Comfy yet Fashion Forward Boots– With all the walking and long hours on my feet I’ve had at work this winter my feet have been crying out for a little love so I have turned to comfort footwear.  I know some of you are rolling your eyes but comfort footwear has come a long way.  BORN makes some incredibly chic boots that feel like you are walking on a cloud from heaven.  They have saved my feet on long days!
  4. Chic Scarves. I love a good scarf. It adds a certain effortless glamour to any outfit and there are a million different ways to style one: modern one loops, a bow, turtleneck, infinity loop, waterfall, braid look, European loop, twist, fabulous fashion knot, etc.
  5. Statement Bags. Nothing perks up a look faster than a great bag.

How to Add Street Style Edge to Your Look

How to Add Street Style Edge to Your look

Street-style is so haute.

Spring 2018 is all about adding that street-style edginess to your look.  It’s about balancing the whimsy and femininity of the season with a gritty street-style vibe.  A Yin with a Yang.

Think denim, bold color and of course patches paired with girly dresses in lace, floral prints and tropical motifs.

Patched denim jackets, dresses, shirts, heels, booties and bags are hotter than ever this season.   From Cub Scout-esc merit badges at DSQUARED2 to disco musical note patched suits at Gucci designers sewed one (or two or three) on for the season!

You’ll find pieces patched up across the board for SS18 from designer to fast fashion and everything in between. The great thing about this trend is that its super DIY friendly!

The patch trend adds fuel to and  further emphasizes fashion’s current love affair with personalization.  Incorporating a few vintage patches onto a basic shirt or bag can not only transform it into something super chic and designer-esc, it also lets you infuse your personality into your clothing.

You can find “lots” of vintage patches on Ebay and on Amazon for pretty cheap- usually you can buy a dozen “surprise” pack for like $5.  Retailers such as TOPSHOP and Nasty Gal also sell some pretty amazing POP culture patches on their sites- they are a bit more pricey but totally worth it to get the perfect patch (around $14 for 3 or 4 patches).

Stylist’s DIY TIP: If you are going to DIY a piece with some patches, I suggest you lay out all of your patches and pin them before you start sewing.  This makes it easy to move them around until you find a combination you like.  Make sure to place a few on the back as well- it will give you that true designer touch.  Keep in mind that some patches say they are iron on but I never trust that they will hold so I always stitch them on- you can do this by hand or by machine.

Why I Love Denim Jackets

I have been LIVING in denim jackets.  They are fully incorporated into my Spring rotation on repeat.

Classic and timeless they are one of those staple items that will NEVER go out of style.

On it’s own this ETRO midi dress is a bit too “ladies lunching” but the denim jacket adds an edgy street-style vibe to complete the look.

Out of all the jackets I have in my closet, I find myself almost always reaching for one of my denim jackets to style my outfits with.

Seasonless, timeless and just plain cool they are a classic staple and you need one. Period. Whether its a dark wash, aged or embellished with patches, harware or embroidery a denim jacket is a must for this season and the seasons ahead.

Stylists Tip: Sometimes when stacking/layering necklaces you’ll find that one needs to be just a tad bit shorter to make the perfect stack.  Stylist’s use a nifty little trick to achieve the perfect length on necklaces.  Gather the back of the necklace to the desired length then take a produce twist-tie (which you can stock up on for free in any grocery store) and twist it around the chain to secure it.  Bam.  Perfect length.
