Why I’ll Be Rockin’ a Vintage Mumu All Summer Long

Have I mentioned that it gets really hot here in Vegas during the summer?  Like Satan’s Blowdryer set to the “Hot as Hell” setting hot?

One of the most difficult things to do is to motivate yourself to “look cute” when you are more concerned about the bottoms of your shoes melting on the asphalt as you walk to your car (yep that actually happened to me once).

But I have found an on-trend, uber chic, pocket-friendly and oh-so-comfortable solution for the sweltering months… the MuMu.

Yep, you heard me right the MuMu aka MuuMuu.

This current yet retro piece of clothing was once thought of as an unflattering grandma dress but I am here to argue that the Mumu is the ultimate summer staple.

During the 1960’s and 70’s Mumu’s were the most glamorous thing you could wear.  Designers like Halston, Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Dior sent mumus (and their sibling the caftan) down their runways, making them the go-to of Hollywood and the fashion elite.

Then we entered the era of the body-con and uber tight fitting dresses and the once celebrated “MuMu” suddenly became a bad word associated with ill-fitting clothing only worn by Grandmas whilst watching their “stories”.

Times and fashion have shifted once again and fashion is now celebrating looser silhouettes, functionality and individuality!

So here we are, the MuMu is back baby and here are FOUR reason’s why I’ll be rockin’ a vintage Mumu all summer long:

  1. The fabrics and prints are so unique and eyecatching.  Seriously from tropical florals to garden prints, ikat, batik and everything in between there is nothing like gorgeous vintage MuMu fabric.
  2. They are comfortable AF. Airy and loose this easy silhouette is as comfy as a nightgown.
  3. The Mumu’s style fits in perfectly with both the current California Cool AND Boho Trends.
  4. No one else will ever be wearing the same thing as you.  Mic drop.

Pair them with a Kimono to punch up the style factor even more: Kimonos are light as a feather and can make even the most basic outfit look stunning in seconds.

Whether you wear it loose and flowing like Diana Ross or belted and boho like Alexa Chung, Mumu’s give off a chic-hippie summer vibe that feels so dang good on warm days.

Why Fedoras are Still Cool for Fall 2018

Fedora Trend

It will be hard to find a fall or winter season that could not be fashionably improved by wearing the perfect fedora.

Amidst all the crazy hat trends surfacing this season like the balaclava- seriously who is wearing this besides Pussy Riot-  thankfully there is one uber wearable ultra chic head topper that I can totally get behind, the fedora.

Fedoras made a strong showing on the F/W 18-19 runways. Saint Laurent delivered Classic Hollywood-esc eye-sweeping fedoras, Dolce & Gabbana played with banded, bedazzled and patterned fedoras and models at Michael Kors strutted down the runway in mixed media fedoras (hello leopard x plaid print fedora)!

The right fedora can add that perfect understated cool factor to any look. They are like the chameleons of hats blending well with a multitude of styles.  They say yee-haw when paired with a western look, give off those Alexa Chung vibes when worn in a floppy boho style and can ooze silver screen glam when worn with structured silhouettes.

Intrigued?  Wanna give a fedora a try this season but not sure where to start?

The most important thing is the fit.  You don’t want your fedora to be too tight or too loose. It should fit snugly but not so snugly that it leaves a red mark on your forehead and it should rest about 1/2 way down your forehead. Keep the back brim of your fedora tilted up and the front brim can either be tilted up or left straight.

The crown should rise about three to four inches from your head with about half an inch of space from your hair. The crease (also referred to as the pinch on cowboy hats) should be a valley no deeper than an inch. The brim, for most head shapes, should reach no further than three inches on all sides. And, the band that wraps around is totally optional (but, absolutely recommended).

I personally prefer a fedora with a floppy brim but you can choose a more structured brim as well.

Floppy brims will soften the edges of your face which is great for square shaped faces, while taller fedoras will lengthen a round face.

Got an oval face? Lucky you – most hat styles will look great on you. Long faces should steer away from fedoras with too much height and look for full or upturned brims to add width.

Westworld Inspired Prairie Style

Westworld Inspired Prairie Style

Westworld is back, and my obsession with the series has reached peak levels.

I can’t get enough of it, the amazing characters, sets and of course the style.

The women of Westworld have a bit more of a prairie vibe than a wild wild west type of fashion sense, a trend that I am oh so happy to get on-board with and don’t mind snagging some inspiration from.  It’s the perfect fusion of Western and Boho and it’s oh so wearable.

Think light airy fabrics paired with layered cuts, frills, pioneer worthy lace trims, delicate floral prints, high necklines, pretty calico yoke blouses, long hemlines, gingham prints and Little House on the Prairie-esc patchwork patterns in sun-faded shades.

Prairie style is one part romantic and feminine and one part wild rugged free-spirit.  It’s boho meets pure hard working country.

The key to pulling off the Westworld inspired trend is all in the styling. Wear a yoke print blouse with a pair of boyfriend jeans or a pretty prairie dress with a pair of chunky boots or a long tiered prairie skirt with a ruffled top.  Denim is always a good choice to pair with this trend, make sure it has some good sun-faded texture, and you can never go wrong with a saddle bag by your side.   Experiment with mixing different sized prairie florals that are in the same color range to create prairie perfection.  Stay away from cowboy boots so that your look doesn’t become too western, instead opt for wood sandals, lace up boho boots, suede booties and please NO cowboy hats!

Romantic Summer Boho

Romantic Summer Boho

Chunky Vintage Jewels, flowing fabrics and swirly maxi dresses are the things that romantic summer boho is made of.

Bohemian outfits and style, are grounded in the idea that you have the freedom to layer and combine different styles of clothing and different decades to reflect your unique character.

Vintage with hot off the presses, new with old and structured with fluid.

Boho doesn’t have to be all flower power, mid drifts and festivals!  With an almost unlimited number of ways to stamp your own character on the style, the bohemian chic look suits almost everyone and every age.  The key to pulling off the boho trend while still letting your own personal style shine through is to use two simple style tools I’ve discussed before:

  1. Wear the Wrong Shoes
  2. Pile on the Chunky Jewels.

Using these two styling tricks you can give almost any look a cool boho aesthetic- and of course some oversized sunnies can’t hurt.

Wear the wrong shoes.  Fight your instincts.  If you have on a dress that looks super feminine pair it with a chunky ankle boot or a clog rather than a strappy sandal or heel. This one style trick alone transforms a look from sweet summer garden party hostess to earthy boho goddess.

Pile on the chunky jewels.  Some well layered vintage jewels (especially anything that has a Native American Vibe) screams boho.  Boho jewelry is intended to be noticed, so aim for big and bold but with a natural feel. Choose eclectic designs crafted from leather, shells, wooden beads, turquoise or other natural stones.  My friend Polly aka The Jewelers Daughter has some wow-inducing one-of-a-kind vintage pieces as well as stunning creations she has crafted herself that will instantly have you looking like a boho pro.
