Steal the Style: Guardians of the Galaxy

There has been a scifi sized black-hole in my heart ever since Joss Whedon’s cult classic sci-fi space opera series Firefly went off the air over a decade ago.

The smart-mouthed space cowboy series packed with flawed but lovable characters banding together- for various reasons- to save the universe delivered a unique kind of sci-fi which no one has been able to touch since then…until now.

Last week I was lucky enough to attend a press screening of the long awaited and much anticipate film Guardians of the Galaxy- yeah I know you are super jealous!

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team—the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits—Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand—with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.

To create the out-of-this world looks for the film award winning Costume Designer  Alexandra Byrne turned first to the comic books to understand the worlds she was tasked with outfitting, then to Director James Gunn’s vision of  the world of Guardians of the Galaxy as “non-Earthly, but also not sci-fi, either”.  The goal being for the characters to look alien yet contemporary.

From the second I heard Redbone’s “Come and Get Your Love” and Chris Pratt (aka Peter Quill aka Star Lord) donned his Walkman while dancing across the screen they had me.

That scene sealed the deal. I was all in.

Director James Gunn’s quirky sense of humor and unique directorial style deliver that special brand of sci-fi not seen since Firefly.

Featuring a GINORMOUS ensemble cast  (Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan -from Doctor Who, Djimon Hounsou, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close and Benicio del Toro) plus plenty of star studded cameos (Nathan Fillion, Stan Lee and Rob Zombie’s voice) “Guardians of the Galaxy”  is a universe full of loveable misfit characters that each bring thier own unique style and personality traits to the table.

I’m forecasting a Fall/Winter packed full of Oxblood leather jackets inspired by Chris Pratt’s character, 70s music from this awesome soundtrack and Guardians of the Galaxy family Halloween costumes – mom and dad dressed as Star-Lord and Gamora, the kids at Rocket.

Are you as #OBSESSED with Guardians of the Galaxy as I am?
