How to get that Cigarette Smell out of your hair without washing it

There is nothing worse than washing your hair and getting a great blow-out only to walk right into a smoky environment.

Cigarette smoke is gross.  So gross. Even smokers know it’s gross.  It just clings to your hair causing it to stink like crazy.  It lingers and all you can smell all day long is that stink stuck in your hair!

No matter what you do the only solution seems to be to wash it again- and for those of us that don’t wash on the daily it’s a huge inconvenience.

… but you know I have some tricks up my sleeve for that!

Whether you had a late night out in a smoky bar, walked through a casino or just had to pass through a crowd of smokers on your way into the mall (why do they always hang out right by the entrances!!), I have a few remedies to get that cigarette smell out of your hair without having to wash it.

Dryer sheets!  Rub a dryer sheet over your hair it will remove smoke smells and leave behind an oh so fresh scent.  You can also rub your hairbrush with a dryer sheet and then comb through your strands to aerate them and infuse your locks with a fresh scent.  (I told you to always have them on hand- they are miracle workers)!

Dry Shampoo!  Designed to absorb oils and get rid of smells, dry shampoo can be a quick refresher to ditch that cigarette stank.

Essential Oils! They are a beauty gal’s BFF.  Essential oils have been used for ages in beauty and wellness because well, they’re awesome. Since they’re concentrated, they pack a punch in the scent department and won’t leave your hair feeling greasy. Choose your favorite scent — coconut, vanilla, orange, whatever — and pour a few drops into your palm (NOT TOO MUCH or it could dry your hair out- a little goes a long way). Rub together and gently work it through your hair. Voila insta-refresh!  I like to use it as a preventive measure.  I apply to wet hair before I style it and it repels that stink like a boss!  Different oils can do everything from helping hair grow and battling a dry scalp to adding strength and shine- so if you need an extra boost research which oils best suit your needs!

Hair Perfume (yes it’s a thing)! This is a relatively new product to the hair scene- in fact I had to order one and test it before I wrote this post. Designed to neutralize trapped odors such as cigarette smells hair perfume has anti-odor technology built in where bad smell (from smoke, sweat, kitchen etc.) is encapsulated and neutralized. One or two spritzes can freshen up smelly and sweaty locks after an intense workout, or cover up the stench of cigarette smoke.

Why not just spray your regular perfume on  on your hair?  Well, hair perfume is formulated to last longer than regular perfume and is designed to nourish and moisturize your hair without weighing it down or drying it out.

Apply on dry hair as a step AFTER your heat styling tools. It’s best to spray hair perfume onto a brush, rather than spritzing directly onto your hair or you can apply it to your hands and run through locks. If you know ahead of time that you will be entering a smoky environment using hair perfume beforehand can act as a preventative measure.  I have to say this it my personal favorite method.  It works like a charm for eliminating cigarette odors and leaves your hair smelling fabulous!  Winner Winner!

  2. These are all great tips, especially the hair perfume. I hate being around smoky environments because of the second hand and the smoke smell that stays in hair. Fortunately, I don’t find myself in smoky environments much.

  4. I usually use dry shampoo, but now I’m curious about dryer sheets! We go for Korean BBQ frequently and that smoke stays with me for days!

    1. LOL Dryer sheets are great for a quick fix… but I really love the way the Hair Perfume and the Essential Oils completely banish the stink!
